How making food safe can harm wildlife and water

How making food safe can harm wildlife and water - A broadcast by NPR  relating to the Salinas Valley California and its problems brings to mind that Vetiver hedgerows strategically placed on this agricultural land and adjacent rivers, drainage and other infrastructure could  clear up some of the problems - specifically removal of excess nitrates and phosphates from runoff - reduction in agricultural chemicals in leachate, and the provision of habitat for beneficial insects that can control crop pests.  Much of vetiver's ability to do just this has already been researched, see for example: Paper 1 Paper2  Vetiver has been used in California for more than 10 years for slope stabilization and has been shown to be 100% non invasive.  It could be used  not only in the Salinas Valley, but also in most other agricultural areas with very good agricultural and environmental effect.  The folks at UC Davis and others should take a hard look at this plant and associated technology.  Maybe the farmers mentioned in the NPR article might be interested too!
